Instagram is difficult to plan as a simple “post on Wednesday” list because carousels, Reels and Stories serve different purposes. When every format follows the same workflow, teams usually end up finishing covers, captions and frame order at the last minute.
Assign a role to each format first
Carousels work well for step-by-step ideas, Reels for dynamic content and Stories for more immediate audience contact. Choose the format from the idea rather than after the copy is already finished.
Build a carousel as one narrative
The first slide sets the topic and the following slides should continue it. A random group of images does not become a useful carousel simply because there is more than one.
Reels needs its own video check
Before the scheduled date, review the actual video, cover, caption and how the piece fits the broader visual feed. Finishing the video in the last hour defeats the purpose of planning.
Leave some Stories space for timely content
Even when supported Stories are prepared in advance, do not fill every future slot. Timely events and audience reactions need room.
Review the week as a whole
The calendar should show both dates and format balance. Three Reels in a row or several similar carousels can be intentional, but the decision should be visible before publishing.
The commercial automated publishing workflow is described separately on the Instagram autoposting page.
